Honoring the Memory

Leonard Smallacombe receives awardLeonard Smallacombe of Port St. Lucie received the 2010-2011 Florida State Elks Association Elk of the Year award from Association Presience James Hurst Jr. for his work as state coordinator of the Presidential Memorial Certificate program.

The Presidential Memorial Certificate is a gold-embossed certificate inscribed with the veteran's name and bearing the signature of the president of the United States. It is presented to next of kin and loved ones of honorably discharged veterans after the veteran dies.

Smallcombe brought the program to the attention of Treasure Coast Hospice last Veteran's Day. Veterans are identified as they enter into our care, and their families are given the form to receive the certificate.

While 550 agencies are designated as recruits in the program, Treasure Coast Hospice is only the 79th to be ranked in Level 1, and fewer than a dozen have achieved Levels 2, 3 or 4. We are already well on the way to accomplishing the tasks for the Level 2 designation.
